possessed the regard and esteem of his brother
officers, and died, much Lamented, on the 16th
day of the same month, at Rosendaal; where his
remains were interred. Thus in the 44th year of
his age, after a service of 29 years, in defence of
his country, fell a brave man, a sincere friend,
and a most affectionate husband; whose grea
test pride was to emulate others, by the honora
ble and zealous discharge of his duty. This hum
ble tribute of respect to his beloved memory,
is erected by Alderman Browne, brother to his
afflicted widow, whose loss is the more severe,
from the recollection of his private worth.'

Het volgende monument bevindt zich in de zui
delijke zijbeuk van het schip van de kathedraal
van Canterbury. Het is opgericht ter nagedach
tenis van Captain John Purvis, die op 16 maart
1814 begraven is te Roosendaal. Het monument
heeft de vorm van een epitaaf (aan de wand
hangend monument) en is opgericht en betaald
door atderman (wethouder) Browne, de zwager
van Purvis, zoals te lezen is in de inscriptie.
Inscriptie: 'Sacred to the memory of Captain
JOHN PURVIS, of the First, or Royal Scots Re
giment, who was mortally wounded on the night
of the 8th of March, 1814, whilst gallantly leading
a division of that brave regiment to the charge,
at the seige of Bergen op Zoom. He deservedly
